The concept behind Go and Get a Grown Up is the acceptance that many of us as parents readily admit that we use the TV as a babysitter. All well and good. But there's no harm in reminding parents that they've got a role in bringing up their children too!

So although these are children's programmes, they are really intended for the adults! The opening song invites the children to "Go and Get a Grown Up" and through imitative behaviour, it is hoped that the children will go and get the grown up looking after them. "I've got one!" is the catchphrase of the format.

Together, the grownup and child watching at home, will see a profile of the grown up and child on TV, who then go out into the outside world to do something. The child on TV then suggests an activity that the child and carer watching at home can do together. "Why don't you go and get a grown up and....."

Understanding children's desire to do things immediately the show tries to be kind to grown-ups, avoiding messy painting activities and focussing on activities that are really accessible. Good examples are making a tent with a sheet, pairing socks or playing a memory game.

At the end of the programme the child tells the adult they can go back to work! Life is tough being a grown up!
